Cardi B’s ‘Invasion Of Privacy’ Is Gold Certified and Popping On the Charts (Album Review Inside)

After a long awaited buildup, one of the most anticipated albums of 2018 has arrived! Cardi B’s debut studio album, Invasion Of Privacy, is fierce, funny, foul-mouthed and blunt! The album consists of razor-sharp hooks from A-list producers and co writers, dope features and is musically diverse.

April 6th, 2018, Cardi released Invasion Of Privacy under Atlantic Records. On March 26th, the Bronx rapper announced the title of her upcoming album along with the cover art via social media. Following those announcements, on April 4th, she previewed the tracklist to Invasion Of Privacy where fans only saw the two features from 21 Savage and Migos, who respectively contributed to the previously released singles “Bartier Cardi” and “Drip.” Now that the album has dropped fans see that the project is stacked with featured guests and Cardi utilizes her collaborators for their known strengths.

The new 13-track project features the still potent “Bodak Yellow” but also a few inspired samples like “Be Careful” and “Bickenhead” which pay homage to classic hits. On “Be Careful” she borrows the cadence and flow from Lauryn Hill’s “Ex-Factor,” which in fact samples Wu Tang Clan’s “Can it Be All So Simple.” In an interview with Hot 97’s Ebro Darden , she explained that Lauryn Hill had to first listen to the track in order to approve the sample use. She gushed by saying “For her to approve it- nobody can talk shit about this record to me because the sensai approved it.”

Cardi throws it back on her “Bickenhead” by spitting over an 2001 inspired banger, “Chickenhead” by Memphis heavyweight, Project Pat. She also recruits Chance the Rapper for the wholesome gratitude bop “Best Life” and YG for the twerk-ready track, “She Bad.” She taps a wholehearted Kehlani for the scorned anthem, “Ring” for any woman who’s ever been played.

She goes on to make a DJ Khaled “Wild Thoughts” move and takes a fun, well-loved Latin hit and refurbishes it for modern listeners. With it’s sample of Pete Rodriguez’s 1967 Latin hit “I Like It Like That”, the unofficial 2018 summer banger “I Like It” features international reggaeton superstars J Balvin and Bad Bunny rapping on the Latin-Trap track in Spanish. Cardi has been shaking up the game and opening up a new genre with her many bilingual bangers. For her it’s just her tapping into her true Dominican and Trinidadian roots while still expressing her New York background. Her latest, “I Like It,” has the potential to take over the summer and top the charts following in the footsteps of the Latin-American crossover singles like Justin Bieber’s “Despacito” remix and Beyonce’s remix to J Balvin’s “Mi Gente.” To close out the no skip necessary project, Cardi calls on the no-f*cks- given SZA to soulfully shine on the mic-drop outro “I Do.”

This album’s best quality is how it shows off the breakthrough female mc’s growth and range. Besides the sexually explicit bars, Cardi has the ability to ether anybody who tries to cross her. Whether you’re a side chick or a Instagram troll in her comments, she makes it known that “you can pull up, you can get it!” Although at times she has a hard-edged demeanor, the versatile lyricist is loved by many, especially when she’s at her most vulnerable. Throughout the album Cardi shows her emotional transparency. While singing tenderly on “Be Careful” with lyrics like “Be careful with me/My heart is like a package with a fragile label on it” she then switches it up by spitting relatable, hard-hitting bars like “The switchin’ up shit is what I can’t f*ck with/ I’m feelin’ you but you hard to get in touch with.” Cardi is a powerful rapper with a powerfully energetic and distinctive flow paired with clever, funny lyrics.

The internet personality, reality tv star from VH1’s Love & Hip Hop: New York, and former stripper has made a household name for herself since the release of her first mixtape a couple years ago. Cardi has become one of music’s biggest stars in just 10 months since the release of her breakout single “Bodak Yellow.” Throughout 2017 Cardi began to really enjoy the fruits of her labor and new found mainstream fame.
